National Prematurity Month Celebration
Kettering Medical Center’s Precious Beginnings, along with the March of Dimes,
participated in National Prematurity Awareness Month activities during November.
All year long, through information and educational tools, KMC raises awareness and
educates families to help reduce premature births. Kettering Medical Center also
participated in the national lighting of buildings with pink and blue lights to
draw attention to National Prematurity Awareness Month.

our patients are moved to the Mother/Baby
unit. Each of these private rooms
has its own shower and sitz bath for
the new mother’s comfort. TV and VCR,
recliners for the coach all add to
the home-like atmosphere.
The Mother/Baby Nursery is a secured
area. There is always someone available
to take care of your baby while you
shower or rest. Your Pediatrician
will see your baby while you are in
the hospital and give you updates
on his/her progress. You may bring
a special outfit for your baby’s First
Foto if you wish. Baby Gallery pictures
are provided free of charge for the
Internet with your written permission.
Friends and relatives around the world
will be able to leave you messages
of congratulations on your blessed
event.
The professional staff is available
to help you make a smooth transition
into parenthood by providing support
and instruction in self and baby care.
For mothers who choose to breast feed,
a Lactation consultant will visit
daily based on your level of need.

Special Care Nursery for
newborns
If you're like most expectant parents,
you looked forward to taking your
new baby home with you from the hospital.
Now that your baby needs special medical
and nursing attention, here is some
information to aquaint you with our
Special Care Nursery (SCN).
Naturally, you have many questions
about your baby's condition and the
care in the SCN. The illnesses that
require SCN care have many causes.
The doctor will talk with you about
what may have caused your baby's condition.
Your baby's doctor and the staff in
the nursery will keep you informed
of your baby's progress. They'll answer
any questions you have and you can
be assured that your baby is in the
best hands possible.
At Kettering Medical Center, newborns
with special medical needs are admitted
to our 10-bed, Level II, Special
Care Nursery (SCN) where state-of-the-art
equipment and specially trained staff
are prepared to provide a high level
of quality care. Our Neonatologists
(Special care baby physicians) are
available 24-hours a day and our nurses
are neonatal advanced life support
certified. These skilled SCN nurses
are present during all high risk deliveries
and are accompanied by a respiratory
therapist and neonatal physician,
when needed.
Each baby admitted to our SCN receives
individualized care based on their
medical needs. Newborns can be admitted
to the SCN by request of the physician
for observation or because of risk
factors associated with prematurity,
low birth weight, twin and triplet
births, oxygen therapy, tube feeding
or other special care needs.
Our SCN staff is committed to a family-centered,
team approach to caring for newborns.
We work closely with your family physician,
pediatrician, or other health care
professionals to meet your baby's
physical and emotional needs. Daily
reports are provided to parents and,
together with a nurse, you are encouraged
to help care for your baby.
Newborns can be admitted to the SCN
because of the following risk factors:
prematurity, low birth weight, twin
and triplet births, oxygen therapy,
tube feeding or other special care
needs.
