1. Improperly Fitting Barrier

  • Periodically measure the stoma and resize the wafer opening to be slightly larger than the stoma.
  • Use a size that fits closely around the stoma.
  • Use a light dusting of ostomy powder to any irritated skin and then apply wafer over the treated skin. Change the wafer in 3 days and treat again if not totally resolved.

2. Mechanical Damage

  • Apply stoma adhesive powder.
  • If irritation is under the tape part of the wafer, try a different system that does not have tape.
  • When removing the wafer, remove slowly to avoid skin stripping.
  • You can use stoma adhesive powder on any open areas until healed.
  • Contact your Certified WOC nurse if rash persists.

3. Allergy to Wafer

  • If rash perfectly matches the brown part of the wafer, you may be allergic to the barrier.
  • When cleaning the skin and preparing it for the wafer, do not use any soaps and rinse the skin well. Do not use any skin preparations.
  • Apply stoma adhesive powder.
  • If rash persists, change to another brand of ostomy wafers.
  • If rash persists contact your Certified WOC nurse.

4. Folliculitis

  • Inflammation of the hair follicles around the stoma. This is indicated by redness at the base of the hair shaft.
  • Remove hair from the stoma area by either clipping with scissors or shaving with an electric razor.

5. Rash Under Skin Wafer

  • Sometimes a rash is caused by a skin infection, skin sensitivity or leakage.
  • The rash may be red or red with bumps. The rash is usually itchy.
  • See your doctor for an antifungal skin treatment to use under the wafer.
  • Only use treatment for a short period of time to clear up the rash.
  • If rash persists contact your Certified WOC nurse.

6. Skin Irritation

  • Periodically measure the skin barrier and size wafer to be slightly bigger than the stoma.
  • Use a size that fits closely around the stoma.
  • Use light dusting of ostomy powder to any irritated skin, then reapply wafer over the treated skin. Change the wafer in 3 days and treat again if not totally resolved.
