Program Description

The Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery Program based at Grandview Hospital provides a diverse learning experience. The program is chaired by John Alway, DO, a board certified physician and fellow in the AOCOO-HNS.

Grandview provides a complete program. Residents attend weekly lectures and are exposed to a variety of teaching videos. The lectures are associated with the University of Cincinnati. Residents are required to give lectures to the house staff and teach students and interns on the service. Monthly journal clubs are conducted with the base faculty. There are a variety of attending physicians who aid in the education of residents. The program currently has four base facilities and numerous associate faculty.

Our residency is a “hands on” program that seeks a highly motivated individual. Experience is gained in the ER and OR at a variety of hospitals including: Grandview, Southview, Kettering Medical Center, Miami Valley and Dayton’s Children’s Hospital. Clinical experience is gained by spending office time with the trainers. Out-rotations are provided at the Children’s Medical Center in Cincinnati, with Dr. Hamaker in Indianapolis as well as other sites. The Program allows for approximately 3-6 months of electives.

Residents are required to be members of the specialty academies and participate in the home study course and in service exams. The program provides required resident courses including Iowa Basic sciences, head and neck, laser, sinus, temporal bone, allergy and facial plastic surgery. The call schedules are dependent on the desires of the supervising attending while on an out-rotation, or about every other night while on the in house service. Call is from home for the in house service.

Applications for specialty track internship can be submitted to the Department of Medical Education, all applications must be submitted by October 1. Interviews will be held at the end of October or beginning of November. Elective rotations are highly recommended. All student rotations can be arranged through the CORE office by calling (937) 226-3957 or by submitting an extern application.
